How to Dry Flowers for a Shadow Box

A big part of making the perfect shadowbox is flower preparation. Many people have never worked with flowers before and want to create a lasting memory from a special day. I like to keep it simple.

Supplies:

Flowers to preserve

Hot Glue

Shadow Box

Unscented Hair Spray

Any other Mementos for the box. Jewely, invites, confetti, place cards etc.

Here is my process.

  1. Once you are ready to preserve the flowers cut the buds off the stems. You may want to keep some greenery as well.

  2. Lay them in an open area. Do not put them in a bag or box when you are drying them. They will get moldy!

  3. Once the flowers are laid out you can spray with a Non scented hairspray. This will keep the petals intact.

  4. After a few days or weeks depending on the bouquet you can now assemble your box.

  5. Take a few of the biggest buds or flowers and glue them to the backing. You can then arrange the rest of the flowers around. You won't have to glue everything to the backing, but you do want to glue some to stabilize the flowers inside. You will want to fill the box so it's completely full. The flowers will settle overtime. It's ideal to pinch or press some of the buds in the frame to keep everything intact. While arranging the flowers don't forget to add any mementos.
